Bird Cages-Grade 1

I've always wanted to do a little bird cage project so this was the year and the time. We started off drawing three birds, sharpie, color in the primary colors and then we did a little watercolor over the top. Day 2 we drew large cages and colored them in, glued the birds with a little tissue paper wing for texture and used black strips of paper for our vertical and horizontal lines. Fun times in 1st grade!

A lil' Mondrian-Kindergarten

Students in Kindergarten had previously worked with vertical and horizontal lines. We continued those lines right into a Mondrian style project. We reviewed primary colors and created a pictures based from Piet Mondrian's painting Broadway Boogie Woogie. Student enjoyed making city blocks, streets and colorful cars!

Crazy Print Birds

This was what I decided to do with printmaking this year in first grade. We also used the primary colors. I found various junk items around the room, some paper plates and let the kids print on two 9x12 sheets. This week when they come in we will assemble the birds. Drawing an arch across the first 9x12 turned horizontally. Fold the 2ND piece in half, draw a 'U' shape with a cloud-like line over the top for the wings. Make sure the kids keep the paper folded in order to get two wings. We will finish with some eyes, a beak and little legs. I'm anxious to see these hanging around the school!

String Print

3rd graders make this neat-o print project. We talked about raised surfaces and additive printmaking, also the primary colors. The first part is gluing the string on. I usually have the kids do this towards the end of the first class, then the next time they come to class it's dry and ready to print. We talk about brayers since it's a new tool for the kids. Basically students choose 2 primary colors, roll on the paint, print and do again with the second color. Results are great!

Primary Color Cities

Here is a project I did with Kindergarten. It was the first big project we did since it took us a couple weeks to practice cutting, gluing and all those fun things I forget Kindergarten students need practice with every year. The first thing I had the students do was use white paint to splatter on black paper to create a night effect. I got this idea from another blogger but can't remember which one. I changed up the city part to primary colors though. A good starter project for Kindergarten. A little messy and more cutting/gluing practice with the buildings. This project took 90 minutes. The first 30 to do the splatter, then the next whole class period for the buildings.
